One of the things I think many Early Childhood programs do not spend enough time on is teaching the proper use of the materials we make available to our children. Then, when they end up lost, broken or misused, we tend to become frustrated with the children. Look at this photo! A TWO year old and a THREE year old independently choose to draw on paper with oil pastels without a teacher sitting at the table. This is not a posed photo. These are children who have been taught and trained for 7 months on how to treat and care for the beautiful art materials that are available to them at Grove Academy. Teaching children to care for and appreciate what they have is something we hope they internalize and show in future schools and other settings.
